The traditional white lab coats are made to protect one’s clothes from working in the laboratory; it is also intended to protect its user from possible infections through exposure of the skin in contaminated areas. Lab coats are also supposed to protect an individual from fire and any hazardous chemicals.

Lab coats that doctors usually wear need to be knee-length and the sleeves must be long enough to cover the arm up to the wrist. This type of garment is made of linen, cotton, or cotton-polyester combined, designed to serve as a protector. A specialist washes lab coats that are exposed from chemicals and substances that are harmful.

There are different functions that lab coats represent. Some use it as a uniform to represent or as a symbol of learning like in Argentina. In some places, teachers use lab coats to protect their street clothes from chalk dust. However, doctors and medical professionals wear them to protect them from exposure and spills.

Various designs and styles of lab coats are already out in the market. Although it has still the same cut that most lab coats have, some manufacturers added some details to it. Some of them made lab coats with slit on the side, so the individual using it will be able to reach his pocket, or putting buttons on the sleeves to secure the wrist from spills.

Traditional lab coats are truly helpful for individuals who use it. It might look like as if it is only a uniform, but it has proven for many years its definite use—a useful garment, not just for anything else.
