These days lab coats are not only made available for adults in health fields and factories but for children as well. A few decades back, you wouldn’t find lab coats that come in kids’ sizes. But now, they are widely sold in department stores and online shops. They also come in traditional white, colored, printed or tie-dyed designs!

Kids’ lab coats are also made using different materials such as traditional 100% cotton, poly-plastic disposables and clean-up free cotton-polyester. This means they are now efficiently used to protect children’s clothes from the shirt, down to the pants. Since lab coats for kids commonly have full sleeves and the hem is long enough to cover the pants, they are very reliable to be used by children for various activities and occasions as mentioned below.

1. For learning in school – School is one of the most obvious places where kids need to wear lab coats. Kids lab coats are widely used and required by schools to be worn during science experiments in the lab. Coats will not only serve as protection from dangerous chemicals or stains but adds an element of fun to children who can easily imagine themselves as real scientists or doctors in their white lab suits.

2. For painting and other crafts – Kids lab coats are also used for painting, pottery, and other messy crafts that children love to get their hands into. Parents can now let their little ones enjoy arts and crafts without worrying about stubborn stains on clothes by using disposable kids’ lab coats or easy-to-wash cotton-polyester lab coats. The long sleeves and long hem can very well cover your child’s clothes from top to bottom. This is much better to use compared to aprons that can only protect the front part of the body.

3. For special occasions – For costume parties, themed birthday parties or Halloween, kids’ lab coats are no-fuss outfits that you can easily dress up to portray a doctor, a mad scientist, a crime scene detective and so much more! Since lab coats for kids are now available in different colors aside from the traditional white lab coat, they are becoming a popular choice by kids to be worn in parties and various occasions that call for a nifty costume. Just add some accessories to make it look as real as possible like a toy stethoscope and clipboard for a doctor’s costume. You can also fix up your kid’s hair with gel and washable hair color, plus wacky fake eyeglasses to portray a mad scientist. You may even want to personalize the coat by embroidering your child’s name on the front breast pocket.

4. For playtime and dress-up – Kids love to play and they love to dress up! You may want to provide some toy doctor play sets, a fake magnifying glass, plastic test tubes and a toy microscope to complete the scene. Play with your little ones and encourage them to learn about science and discover new things. You’ll never know, your child might become a successful doctor or famous scientist someday.

Buying a kid’s lab coat is very practical and any curious child can definitely make good use of it. But they’re not the only beneficiaries, as parents also wind up saving time and hassle in removing stains from clothes. They can even be assured that their child is protected, inspired and having fun safely.

Thinking of another way to use kids lab coat? Then a mad scientist birthday party is a good time to take it out of the closet! Science is a cool subject that never fails to fascinate and excite kids. If your child’s birthday is coming soon, you can plan a science-themed party to spark interest in this subject through fun and wacky activities. You can make it even more interesting by putting together a mad scientist party theme.

With some creative planning, you can create a successful science-themed birthday party without going crazy over it. Here are some suggestions that will help you carry on with this exciting project.

First, you have to come up with an invitation that goes with the theme. You can use a plain white cardboard and cut it to resemble a kids lab coat. Simply write the child’s name on one side and write the details of the party using white crayon on the other side. You can give instructions to the parents on how to reveal the hidden message on the invitation by using a different-colored crayon to shade on it or paint over it using watercolor. Or, you can buy cheap plastic test tubes and simply insert a rolled piece of paper with the party details on it.

For the costume, you may opt for a costume party wherein the attendees are required to come in kids lab coat as mad scientists. To make it even more fun and to encourage them to comply, let them know that cool prizes await the child who has the best interpretation of a mad scientist. However, if it’s going to be a small event with just a number of attendees, you can inform the kids to come as they are and  you can be the one to provide their costumes. Kids dressing themselves as quirky scientists will be a great way to start the party.

Make sure that you have enough lab coats for every child. You can give out silly fake glasses or safety goggles, wigs or help them up with some hair gel and washable hair color spray to style their hair. You can also print out some lab safety symbols on sticker paper so that they can decorate their lab coats with it as well. Or, allow them to print on their costumes using permanent markers since they will be taking them home as souvenirs. It would help if you put up some pictures of famous mad scientists like Freddy Frankenstein, Professor Pete, Mad Mark or Dr. David for inspiration. Just fix up a section of your home or the party venue as the dressing area before they enter the lab. Take pictures of the kids in their costumes and give them away as souvenirs by the end of the party.

For decorations, use glass jars, beakers and more test tubes with colored water in it to decorate a portion of your house that will serve as the lab area. Use colored papers to make up signs, question marks, science and math formulas and other symbols related to science. You may also set the mood by changing your plain light bulbs into colored ones. Don’t forget to put up a big chalkboard or whiteboard with the experiment instructions written on it. Just look up some simple science experiments that you can use as party activities. Some of the easy ones are fizzy test tubes with colored water, baking soda and vinegar. You may also mix up homemade goo by using water, flour and food coloring. And if you want to make some safe “explosions,” you can make use of soda and fill it up with Mentos candies.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to planning a fun and exciting mad scientist birthday party. Just don’t forget to fill the kids’ tummies with yummy treats that go with the theme like Pop Rocks, gummy worms, sandwiches, chips, Jell-O jigglers, fruits and other “science-y” finger foods that you can arrange attractively. These are just some of the things you can do to pull this themed party off and that your child and friends will never forget!
